The owner of the South Square Mall announced that the mall would be demolished and replaced with several big box stores. Along with the Chuck Bohls from UNC’s Center for Urban and Regional Studies, we conducted a three-day charrette to envision an urban adaptation of the site—dense, mixed use, walkable.
Alas, the mall was torn down and replaced by Sam’s Warehouse and Target. During the approval process for the development, the developer came to the City Council asking that the process TTA light rail corridor be moved across the street from the South Square property. DAD opposed this at a public hearing.
